Default Boopoll Of The Week (104) - 02-10-2006, 09:12

I want this week's Boopoll to be a wider discourse on the trappings of fame, the duty of talent and the nature of celebrity. Do you think you're up to that?

So, the runners and riders...

1. A footballer who was blessed with almost superhuman skills, many say the greatest ever, even though he never played in a world cup. Pissed his best years away and many say he wasted his gifts. Also, as a footnote, on his death did he deserve the posthumus adulation, a man who beat his wife and abused a transplanted liver?

2. Probably popular culture's best known 'nearly man'. Original member of the most successful band of all time, kicked out just before they made it big. Couldn't handle the obvious feelings that stirred up and attempted suicide twice before turning his life around. Now makes a decent living on a name now synonymous with being so close to glory but ending up in the gutter. The Pete Best band are touring constantly.

3. Someone living in a big shadow. Despite this, a man with, it seems, no discernible talents or skills becomes famous. This is no big thing, you may say, in this age where you just need to go on a TV show and do nothing to become famous... but this guy didn't even have to do nothing! He's just famous by being a relation to somebody, an accident of birth -he's like a member of the royal family, except you don';t have to pay for him.

So what do these three say about us as a society? And which is truly the most tragic? Someone who has it all and throws it away, someone who almost has it all but has it snatched from them, or someone who is nothing and is happy making a living being so?
Hm? Hm?

I had whole long winded speech about just how shit callum best is, and why he genuinely deserves to be marooned on a tropical(or possibly glacier) island and left there to rot...

However he is not the worst Best.

George.. yes he's a drunk, yes he wasted his life, but I am led to believe he was an amazing footballer. So at least he has some degree of talent.

Pete... suffering dearly from Poor Javine syndrome, does have a degree of talent in the form of hitting some sticks off things to make sounds... so yeah, not the worst.

Callum... yes he's cunt, he has absolutely no actual talent, but then again neither do any other models if that's the route we're following. He has a very pretty face. Maybe not talent, but at least there's the possibility of a job prospect.

Now:

Alex Best... a former air hostess and ex-wife of George Best, who was her senior by 26 years. She married Best in 1995. In 2004 she appeared in I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! and in the same year she won the title of Rear of the Year.

Coffee, Tea or me.

She, my dear boo-buddies is the trappings of fame, the duty of talent and the nature of celebrity.

As ever, so eloquently put. Should really have gone with a fourth option, shoudl'nt I?

In an oddly cyclical point, isn't Javine the current rear of the year? The fact that such a misshapen bag of bones with a rear like a newborn foal could win it means her PR person is trying to pull one last string before it all falls apart in an unnoticed mess.

She could be the hottest, she could be the finest - she still looks like a horse.
You could be the baddest, be the most stylish, - she should sing songs in morse.
It don’t matter what you got, if you heart is out of love,
You could be the hottest, you could be the finest - i still look like horse.

poor javine.
