Thumb Up PLANET BOO 'things of the year' AWARDS

wELL, HERE we go with the annual look at things past and whatnot... those of you who know the inside story of PB will realise that 2004 was a very strange year unfortunately marked by quite a lot of death and illness (to top it all the cat died two days before Christmas, hey ho), but the silver lining is it can't possibly be any worse this year. For Real Shocks it was also an odd one - it was the year they went across to Texas, got discovered by a legendary producer (more of that to come) and ceased to be, only to be transformed, Dr Who-like, into The Videos. Let's hope this change is Pertwee to Baker rather than Davison to McCoy. Anyroadup, on with the nominations....

BEST SINGLE -

THE FIERY FURNACES - 'Single Again'
other nominees - KYLIE - 'I Believe In You', THE CONCRETES - 'Can't Hurry Love', 'GIRLS ALOUD - 'The Show', OUTKAST - 'Roses'

BEST ALBUM

THE CONCRETES - 'The Concretes'
other nominees - THE FUTUREHEADS, FRANZ FERDINAND, MAGNETIC FIELDS
honourable mention - SUPER FURRY ANIMALS - 'Songbook part 1', which was actually my favourite album of the year but was disqualified due to it being a greatest hits thingie

GIG OF THE YEAR

PLANET BOO's Go North showcase @ Dr Drakes

THE ANNUAL OVERHYPED SHITE AWARD, sponsored by Chris from Menswear

(joint winners) RAZORLIGHT, THE LIBERTINES, BABYSHAMBLES ... I am sooo glad I left London!

BEST FILM

BEFORE SUNSET
other nominees - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Sixteen Years Of Alcohol, Lost In Translation, Shaun Of The Dead

THE 'GET CARTER' MOST UNNECESSARY REMAKE OF THE YEAR AWARD

ALFIE
other nominee - The Manchurian Candidate

THE 'don't you get paid enough?' AWARD FOR ADVERTISING WHORE OF THE YEAR

SCARLETT JOHANSSEN
other nominees - Nicole Kidman, Missy Elliott, William Shatner, Julie Walters

THE ALISON GOLDFRAPP SEXIEST WIG OF THE YEAR AWARD

SCARLETT JOHANSSEN (pink bob in 'Lost In Translation')

HONOURABLE MENTION
(For everything)

ANA MANTRONIC

Other suggestions from fellow Boopeople wellcum all....

....Roight, where's the bar? I'm off to drink pink gins and throw vol-au-vents at Terry Nutkins.

...As a wee addendum, one of the oddest moments of the year came on Nu Year's Eve when I heard a radio play on Radio 4 about Delia Derbyshire (pioneer of elektronik musik, probably best known for recording the Dr Who theme) which co-starred Pete Kember, aka Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3 / Spectrum playing himself, but doing it so badly I was convinced until I checked it was some middle-aged luvvie pretending to be him....

Many well deserved awards, my only alterations would be to give Kylie the single of the year, I bought it last week, the first single I've bought since you could buy them in Woolworths on cassette for a quid.

And there should be a "Music Related DVD" of the year for Wonderful Electric, it's the bee's knees.

Two shows...two documentaries...and Alison Goldfrapp... in a black nurses outfit... with PVC boots.....on one DVD?

Yes. And it's good.

I slept through New hermoginy, stired in my sleep when they were bombing localy at midnight, such poor taste. Quite enjoyed the play too, then got really pissed and didnt phone anyone. I was in the wrong orbit.

Here's a quote from Ulrik of The Concretes, upon learning their LP was our pick of the year...

"wow, thanks, we are flattered and proud!

also nice to be on a list that captures this double feeling about
scarlett johansen, she was lost in translation, brilliant movie,
brilliant acting from s. then she does a number of really really stupid
ads plus acts like a complete dunce when being interviewed. the ads
might just be the money talks syndrome (yes we sold out as well so i
should stop whining, but not in the UK mind you) but what is the thing
with this being stupid thing."

...So there you go! Also, forgot to mention, The Concretes' 'Diana Ross' was our track of the year.

I picked up the Concretes today for a steal of eight pounds. Definitelly the best album I've heard for a good while, and the artwork in the liner notes is great too.
