Default Boopoll Of The Week (39)

When I promoted in Liverpool we were offered Oasis at our club, the week 'Supersonic' came out. We turned them down because having a bunch of Manc scallies (you call them Neds, where I grew up in Lincoln they were Casuals, all the same with a different name) in our club was the last thing we needed, we just weren't that sort of place. They instead went across town to The Lomax and all kinds of hell broke loose - windows were smashed and their van got its tyres slashed. I don't regret turning them down, and we turned down Black Grape for a similar reason. S'funny looking back, but at that time no Blur/Oasis thing existed, and Suede were the biggest thing out, so the black and white thing to us was always Suede vs Oasis. Blur were in a bit of a low period and were almost 'underground', although we cherished them for bringing out the fantastic 'Popscene' which bombed in the charts but we felt kicked a bit of Grunge arse and we all dressed up in our sharp suits and jumped around to it on a Saturday night. But I digress...
I know a lot of people who went ga-ga over Oasis, and I've heard the words 'life-affirming' many a time in relation to them, but to paraphrase another Manc luminary, they affirm nothing to me about my life. Nifty tunes, admittedly, but never anything special, I felt. Hey, but what do I know? Who am I to argue with the general public? Who cares if the general public are a bunch of fucking idiots?

All the songs are direct extracts from the Beatles songbook but with really meaningless shit lyrics. The first LP was good background music for pubs hence the 'Darkness-esque' world domination. All Brtitpop was over-rated apart from Denim who never got anywhere. Elastica were dead good too. The House of Love came too soon and should have ruled the world. But Oasis Pulp Blur Superass Suede etc were all the same formula of smarty pants student poetry rock to me. Straight from the refectory. It was a bad decade considering Grunge was also around. Its no wonder I got into Disco music.

I was in primary 5/6 when the whole Oasis/Blur thing broke out.

I was on the Blur side of the tracks, they simply looked and sounded better. Oasis was dead to me until i hit primary 7 and discovered 'Definately Maybe', which is by far their best album and probably the only one that doesnt induce deep sleep after one listen. Nothing spectacular about Oasis.

Damon Albarn was a hotty though. Heh.

Oasis had some really good songs tho. I play in a cover band on top of Point and we get asked to play quite a lot of oasis songs which we have learned and yes they are all really easy to learn to play but for me that is the genius in them. Nothing to spectacular or complicated but very effective.

Love him or hate him Liam is a good front man!

I thought it was strange that people hated 'Be Here Now' - 'Girl In The Dirty Shirt', 'My Big Mouth' and 'I Hope, I Think, I Know' were all fantastic tunes to me. Latter stuff has been a bit rubbiss though admittedly.

I never liked nor disliked them. Oasis devloped a sound that consisted of one distorted guitar and Laim's voice. Drums, bass etc. didn't seem to get much of a look in. For me, blur were the champions. When everyone else LOVED Oasis people had the perception that I hated them and when everyone slated them years later I came acros as though I liked them. My position never changed. They are/were okay.

I believe a relation of mine was one of their bass players. But then, most people think of Oasis as Liam and Noel, vocals and distorted guitar.

Dull.

Blur produced good pop music, wheras Oasis rehashed what The Beatles did and seemed to rely on Liam getting into fights and filling the gossip pages of The Sun rather than concentrate on their on musical output.

i totaly have this argument all the time with some of my friends.
my responce to why Oasis made it bigger than Blur is because Oasis knew how to get into the press a lot better than Blur. Also because of the 'hard guy' image it apealed to a lot of 'hard' guys too. And they were quite hot at that time too. But there just anoying now! If someone else could do there songs it would be great!
