Default Boopoll Of The Week (30)

So, last week was the now annual 'Go North' shindig. It was a smaller affair this year than last, as they weren't going to do it this year at all and have a big one next, but popular demand and all that...
So, what did you lot think? Did you see any decent bands? Were you in a band that played, or do you work in a venue where there were events? Do you think it was worthwhile?
For what it's worth, I think it's a tremendous event - in two days more music folk, A&R and otherwise, congregated in Aberdeen than come to Glasgow in a year, and bands from Europe, Scandinavia, the U.S. and who knows where arrived in town to swap currency, ideas and football stickers with the locals.

i went to a lot of the shows on both nights. a lot of the bands i saw i didn't really like, but that was due to personal opinion and not their technical merit. the highlights for me were dedalus(you'll know them) kid carpet (probably the best...just excellent, one guy on his own with a load of electronic gadgets and stuff, terribly funny too) hoboken (ace electronic stuff, clad in suits) and pomegranate (folky music, the singer had a beautiful vioce, and the contrast of the violins and electronics was amazing), there were a lot more worth mentioning too. go north is great, it was really good last year, didn't have quite the same atmosphere this year, but it was still very much worth it, (come on, it's all free!) if you missed it this year, you should definitely try and make it next time

Needles, our gig. 2 aftershow parties.

It left me feeling quiffed, corrupted and dirty.

Well well people, I dunno... I can't believe around one in four of you had no idea about this event going on right on your doorstep, an event which is now in its fourth year... Talk about insularity!

One of my 'favourite' moments was when a guy came up to me at the Boo nite and asked me to play a track from his band's demo. I was interested because I'd heard good things about said band, but rather disconcerted when he said something along the lines of, 'It's not the sort of thing you're playing, it's kinda rock, y'know?' ...well that's selling it to me... anyhoo, I said leave it with me, I said I'd listen to it later but as I was in the middle of my set it would be just that - later. About an hour down the line he came back to me and said, 'Well, are you gonna play it?' I said no, as I don't play things in my set that I've never heard, that would be stupid. Again I said to leave it with me and I'd have a listen to it later... but too late, he's already taken the CD back and gone off in a strop! I'd like to thank that person, whose band I won't name, because next time I'm asked to do one of the workshops I often do with young musicians about how to get noticed, I will retell that story as exactly how not to do it!
