I was probably the right age. It started when I was 12 - I used to bunk off school and sneak into my big sister's room to listen to her copy of 'The Queen Is Dead'. I used to quiff my hair up, put on her make-up and dance around with no top on... hey, I was only 12, OK?
Yep, I was obsessed. I travelled all over to see The Smiths with my sis, and when she got bored with them I used to go by myself. I found a friend who lived around the corner from him in leafy Cheshire and we used to hang around on his street hoping to bump into him. Finally one day we did. I gave him a spider plant and he signed a postcard for me, which is on the wall beside me as I type. I queued up for three nights for his first solo gig in Wolverhampton. Yeah, I was rabid. By the time I was 16 I had a quiff to be proud of. Never really grew out of Moz, I was just able to rationalise him in my life more. No quiff now, but still a great love.

The Smiths and Morrissey are very much the quintessential entities which I 'don't get' that much. I kinda look at The Smiths as a good band with some good songs but don't see what there is about them to really light a fire under my tree. Same goes for solo Morrissey but to an even greater extent. Having said that, Morrissey did have a truly admirable hairdo back when knights were bold and he likes the New York Dolls.

Your a visionary Mr Boo. The Times ran some letters on Monday under the title 'Is Morrisey a genius?
While no-one seems to doubt his ability with a pen, this made me chortle: " Eventually Steve auditioned with us as a singer, and we turned him down. He had no sense of rhythym and could not hold a note. I remember it being one of the quickest auditions we ever did." |
