what's with this latest trend of "Support your local independent music promoters"?

Sorry if I've missed something, but aren't the vast majority of local promoters "independent"?

A special guest just added to the bill is Adele, a young and soulful singer who recently performed at The Lemon Tree (sat27Aug) as part of The Main Stage Event, a Youth Development Project.

She is very good!
