From the sounds of it, it seems that this compilation is aiming to feature the biggest local bands in Aberdeen all on one cd to expose to the general public who wouldn't frequent to see local bands play.

As Hines said, if some of the acts putting themselves forwards on here are anything to go by it's not going to be the biggest local bands, or even the best (as subjective as that is).

I guess there's no harm in another compilation going out. The fat hippy one was only a few quid to buy and gave decent value even if I didn't like some of the artists. It's par for the course. As long as the thing isn't called "Granite Rocks!" or something equally cringeworthy then I'll probably buy it.

But that leads me onto another issue. If they say the CDs purpose is to expose local bands to people who normally wouldn't see them, then how do they persuade them to buy the CD? I'd guess most compilations like this are bought by people who are already interested in local music. I'd bet most people who bought Fat Hippy, Nomad AM, the Lithium comps back in the day already knew some of the bands who appeared on them and that's why they bought them.

But I thought this compilation was going to be given away for free?

I'm probably being over cynical, but what's in it for them? Despite the username of 'aberdeen scene 2007', I have no idea what connection they've got to the aberdeen music scene.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to our original post, and to all the bands who have PM'd in the last few days, we are currently listening to and considering each band and we will be in touch shortly.

In answer to the questions on what makes this compiliation different to previous ones such as Fat Hippy, this compilation will be on a larger scale, and will be heard by more people because of the fact it is free. It will have a much higher press run and will also be distributed outside of Aberdeen in record shops and venues all around Scotland. The plan is to distribute this to record labels, radio stations and the press nationwide in order to expose the local music scene.

Aberdeen is very much ignored in terms of the music scene, and the fact that Go North isn't being hosted here this year isn't going to help matters. Hopefully this compilation will turn things around.

Strength in numbers!

(See other thread about tomorrow night at the Tunnels room 2 and label/collective launch. Although our cd's aren't as much about showcasing as just compiling some good music by people that happen to live in Aberdeen and it isn't free)

Lets not all go Aberdoom and gloom on someone 'doing' something
