My bass had appauling intonation when I bought it. An hour with a tuner and a screwdriver had that fixed though. If your buying a guitar that's costing near £1000 you'd think they would take the time to give it a good set up.

Yeah £850, and the fact it initially retailed at £1600 it's just bullshit. I won't be buying another Gibson for a while anyway.

You're right that later issues (and the current Les Paul Custom) have a maple top. However, the 1957 les paul custom black beauty reissue still has an all mahogany body.
