What is the story behind this? I guess it is lots of different people bringing their pedal boards in and chaining them together.

Yeah i think thats the deal, jan... just boys and there toys, how weak would you think the signal be once it got to the amp

don't think it would be weak, just wouldn't contain much of the original signal... even if all the effects were bypassed/ off, bet it would still sound crap..
