Turntable -> Laptop DJing... -

What is the most cost effective way for me to use a vinyl turntable to control an mp3 for scratching? M-Audio do their 'Torq' package for 130 quid, which includes their interface, software & timecoded vinyls, but there seems to be some question over the interface's ruggedness.
Do any other ones just use audio timecoding, so that I could just use a Serato vinyl plugged into the audio input of my soundcard (bypassing midi/usb conversions or whatever). This way, if a friend was to lend me their copy of a fully licensed software (just for a day or two to try it out), I would only have to pay for the time coded vinyl, until I decided whether or not I was interested enough in the software to pay for it.
