Default Yamaha BB1200 stringing

I don't know if anyone's got one of these babies - mine's a beautiful bass guitar but it's always had flat wounds; had 'em when I bought it and tho' I've tried a couple of different sets of round wounds, I just get a very twangy, almost country style 6 string sound from them. Anyone else had this experience/got advice on how I could string it other than with flats (which give it an ultra mellow sound that I don't want in a rock band)?

Cheers
