Default Composing Orchestra and String section pieces

What do people use when they don't have musicians doing it?

I've been looking at the old Emu Virtuoso 2000 rack unit, but it seems to be very hard to find. I don't really want to go with a software solution if I can avoid it.

I've also seen that roland have a Symphonic Strings SRX card, but that would involve buying a roland sampler, which i don't have and hadn't really intended to buy.

it seems midi modules are on the way out as software synths become more the norm... but still, something tangible...

any suggestions?

thanks.

I've got Edirol Orchestral...the sounds aren't "great" although they're nice enough, ie. the velocity works well on the strings, I just don't have the patience to use this software without a MIDI controller keyboard...could sling you a copy if you want? DEMO VERSION OF COURSE
