EPISODE 1 FEATURING OS MUTANTES AND TWITCH OUT NOW

Following his TrocaBrahma clash with Tropicalia legends Os Mutantes, Optimo’s JD Twitch discusses their collaborative process, while Mutantes’ affable front-man Sergio muses on Brasil’s current cultural / political climate, and delineates Tropicalia’s legacy almost forty years on. Artists including The Zutons, Ladytron, Echo And The Bunnymen and The Bees discuss Os Mutantes’ enduring relevance. And we hear exclusive live recordings of new and classic Os Mutantes music.

EPISODE 2 FEATURING GILLES PETERSON AND BEN WESTBEECH MEET TITA LIMA

Gilles Peterson hangs out with young jazz singer and beats producer Ben Westbeech as he jams with Brasilian soul jazz singer Tita Lima. Ben and Tita hit it off together musically and we hear snippets from the rehearsal process plus exclusive live recordings. While in Sao Paulo, Ben spent a wad of cash at infamous record shop Eric’s Disco. Gilles finds out how important and influential Eric was in turning Far Out Records boss Joe Davis on to Brasilian music, which in turn inspired Gilles and helped to create a whole cross cultural scene in the UK. We also hear stories and exclusive music recordings from new Far Out act Zeep (aka Nina Miranda and Chris Franck from Da Lata and Smoke City).


EPISODE 3 FEATURING KING CREOSOTE MEETS ROMULO FROES

King Creosote meets Romulo Froes fusing Scottish folk rock with contemporary Bossa Nova. KC and his band visit the market in Sao Paulo, marvel at the pigs trotters and eat fruits you wouldn’t wear. We meet independent Brasilian label Mondo Melhor records and new bossa singer Julio Bareto and hear about new bossa, samba and maracatu music in Brasil. King Creosote’s band talk about how they found the collaborative process, and then get Romulo’s side of the story. Kenny from King Creosote learns a little Portuguese and there’s exclusive live music from Trocabrahma gigs, recorded for the Trocabrahma podcast in Sao Paulo in May and the UK in July 2007.

EPISODE 4 FEATURING GRUFF RHYS MEETS TONY DA GATORRA

Gruffy Rhys meets Tony Da Gatorra mashing melancholic melody with DIY Brasilian electronic-noise protest singing. While mixing sweet songs with electric beats and tweets, we sample typical Sao Paulo eats and treats. Our series host, Diplo, introduces Ira, the bassist from CSS, our guest presenter for this episode who guides us through the wonderful world of Super Fury Animals front man Gruff Rhys with the enchantingly enigmatic Tony Da Gatorra. Along the way we much on some Brasilian treats, including the infamous chicken hearts and go clothes shopping with CSS in Sao Paulo and Glasgow. EPISODE 5 FEATURING FOUR TET MEETS OPEN FIELD CHURCH PLUS STREET ART COLLABORATIONS (SPETO + UK STREET ARTISTS)

Four Tet finds out how a group of musicians, and non-musicians, in Sao Paulo came together to found the Open Field Church, a group of friends who perform a cappella versions of indie classics. Hear how Four Tet fused his intricate electronica with their enthusiastic singing, and marvel at their eclectic repertoire.

Meanwhile in the UK, a street artist from Sao Paulo, Speto, collaborated with three UK graffiti writers to improvise around the themes of Trocabrahma and create original artwork on the walls of London, Liverpool and Glasgow. Street art co-ordinator Andrea McCarthy paints a picture of the process (with photos on the enhanced version of the podcast and in the Trocabrahma Podcast blog) and we hear from artists around the UK and Sao Paulo.

Internationally renowned DJ, producer, podcast presenter and remixer, Diplo, shares his thoughts on the contemporary Brasilian scene while Ben Westbeech introduces us to the collaboration between Diplo’s protégés, Bonde Do Role and the UK’s Radioclit and Amanda Blank. Ben also finds out what everyone involved in Trocabrahma made of this year’s culture jam and we find out what Bonde, Amanda and Radioclit would do with super powers. Plus exclusive live recordings from Sao Paulo and the UK of Bonde and co, one of Domino Records’s hottest acts of 2007.
