Can't confirm Soft Machine but various members have played here at other times Including one doing a stonking set at the Bobbin Mill once.

Back in the day, The Union had a really good roster of regular live bands & often had some absolute crackers in to play. Especially the more off the wall sort eg Nico, Jaques Loussier (Mitchell hall) & The Enid. Even a little known rock band called Texas playing the Beer Bar!

Nice Aberdeen link to the Canterbury Scene: Jimmy Hastings (Caravan and Soft Machine) was born here.

Soft Machine played here in 1974.

I saw Caravan at the University Union on the 'For girls who grow plump in the night' tour (73ish???). Focus played at Drummonds a couple of months ago...I saw their soundcheck.
I'm pretty sure I saw Hatfield and the North here too, 'cos I've got the badge (don't ask why I can't remember...it's a sensitive subject)

What about the Ozric Tentacles? I've been listening to them a lot recently - really stunning stuff. I really want to try getting synth sequences like theirs in the new prog project on the go (The Snake Temple Kings, coming soon )

Infact, anyone ever had a listen to Magma? They have a similarly mad concept not too unlike Gong's. Made up their own language 'n' all those crazy freaks! Their music might seem daft at first but it REALLY climaxes like no other band i've heard. Any thoughts on them?

You know, I never really got a chance to hear Magma!!

I know they are Steve Davis (the ageing snooker player)'s favourite band though!

Yeah, I've read that, and frankly, i can't get my head round it.

Here's a link to where you can hear a magma track. I recommend Da Zeuhl Wortz Mekanik

Here's some Magma video clips too. Pretty disturbing looking and sounding in these clips.
