Default Tortoise - krautrock, prog rock, jazz or post rock band ?

How would you describe the band Tortoise ? Krautrock, jazz or prog rock or even post rock. I am talking about their whole career rather than just one album or period in their career.

I always thought of them as Post-Rock when I started listening to them. The new CD, however, is prog-rock and verges on easy-listening.

I'd have them down as "great instrumental music".

i've always considered them post-rock, in that it's a term that means virtually nothing but includes virtually everything that's done on guitar, drum and bass which pushes the ideas and structures of rock music. they are very jazz in places though, and could easily be krautrock. i'm inclined to go with phil and just say a damn fine instrumental band. annoyed i missed them in glasgow two weeks ago.
