![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Tell No One: French thriller about an innocent guy caught up in a bunch of murders. At over 2 hours long I thought the film would drag a bit but as the story twists and turns it’s fairly edge-of-your-seat cinema that keeps you watching - the biggest problem was that, by the end, the twist-o-rama gets pretty confusing. Another minor downside is the presence of so many similar-looking women that it’s all a bit confusing in the middle of the film. The acting’s superb, given that there are no French heavyweights in the cast and the overall look and feel are very realistic. Ultimately, a very good piece of cinema… should go down well with anyone that likes a good film. 8/10 Crank: holy-shit… has pretty much won the ‘worst film I’ve seen all year’ title already. It’s like someone polled the nuts and zoo readers asking the ‘100 things you’d most like to see in a film’, then tried to link them all together, but failed - epically. Someone obviously put ‘Latino Gangsters’ because our old pal Noel Gugliemi made another appearance as the ultimate typecast! More like watching someone play Grand Theft Auto than a film. Full of: bad product placement, terrible acting, mostly pointless scenes and rubbish stereotypes. I’d almost slipped into a coma by the end of it. Less substance than a low-budget porno… avoid like the plague. 0.1/10 (only because there’s a boob) The Darjeeling Limited: (with Hotel Chevalier). The fact that there’s a pointless short film before the main feature shows how needlessly up-it’s own arse this one is. Not a big change from any of his previous features with the usual themes, style, casting and characters; so if you like other Wes Anderson films you should love this. The whole film is pretty quirky and contains loads of pretentious symbolism / imagery, as well as the occasional cheesy line. The three brothers play well off each other, and although they’re relatively safely cast it’s entertaining to watch their spiritual journey. The soundtrack dominated a lot of the film, and was clearly put in to make the it exponentially cooler. The decent strong story saved this one from being another Life Aquatic... 7/10 |

Clint Eastwood was good in it though, if it is indeed his last acting role it could have been worse. 8/10. Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Not bad but felt overlong, probably could have shaved 20 minutes or so off the running time. 7/10. Martyrs - The weirdest, most f**ked up film I've seen in years. I can't see me wanting to see it again in a hurry, but in terms of the plot development, etc I recommend it, it took several twists and turns along the way and it certainly didn't go where I thought it was going to. 9/10 for originality and sheer gruesomeness. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 21 - Kevin Spacey plays a maths professor who rounds up his most gifted students to start a card counting scam in Las Vegas. It's mostly fluff and no filler, the film (and cast) look great but there isn't much of a story to get into, though Kevin Spacey does his best to add some substance with a good turn and pretty much out-acts everyone else in the film without breaking much of a sweat. A couple of plot twists and turns but nothing too dramatic. An enjoyable film if you don't want to have to think too hard. Think Casino meets The O.C. Thumbs UP Barbarella - I think I said somewhere else in this thread that so often "sci-fi classics" from the 50s and 60s offer little other than kitsch value. This is a prime example, it is an utter pile of drivel. Other than cutesy costumes and kitsch 60s special effects, the plot was dire, boring and confusing, the acting was beyond wooden and the dialogue so clunky it was almost impossible to follow what was going on. Total and absolute shit. Every copy of this film should be burned. I hate it. Thumbs DOWN. Last edited by Lucky Rathen; 08-07-2009 at 12:25.. |

I was at the UK premiere for this when it first came out and it has dated badly. It's funny the things you notice as you get older - for example when Quaid (Arnie) gets his fake ID's - they're old 70's-style laminates and when he arrives on Mars, the Customs guys validate his passport with an old-timey rubber stamp. |
