ZOEY VAN GOEY

A cosmopolitan three-piece, Zoey Van Goey are Matt Brennan (from Canada), Michael John McCarthy (from Ireland) and Kim Moore (from England). They met in Glasgow, Scotland, and started making music together. Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian produced the band's debut single, ‘Foxtrot Vandals’, which was released on limited edition vinyl. Their second single, ‘Sweethearts In Disguise’, was also released on vinyl and followed by a tour of the Scottish festival circuit, including Rockness, T In The Park, Wickerman, Indietracks, Live at Loch Lomond, and Connect. An unashamedely indie-pop voyage of the highest order, their debut tackles bandits, buried treasure, TEFL students in Japan, the apocalypse and much else besides. Zoey Van Goey self-released their debut album 'The Cage Was Unlocked All Along" in May of this year to much acclaim. It is scheduled for a re-release on Chemikal Underground Records during October.

"An irresistible debut album" SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY

"Zoey Van Goey have a pronounced sound of their own ... an excellent album" [4/5] THE SKINNY

“Subtly forged indie folk” [4/5] THE SCOTSMAN

“Pop that comfortably resists pigeonholing” [4/5] THE BIG ISSUE

“Delightfully experimental indie ... easy to fall in love with" [4/5] SUBBA-CULTCHA

“Anthemic, insightful indie-folk with wonderful sparkles of humour” CLASH MAGAZINE

"It's good to know a Glasgow-based band like Zoey Van Goey can flourish ... This is charming folk-pop" NME

STRIKE THE COLOURS

Strike The Colours - aka Jenny Reeve and a varied line-up of some of Scotland's most talented musicians released new mini-album 'The Face That Sunk A Thousand Ships' on June 18th. Reeve has recently toured with Malcolm Middleton and features heavily on his latest solo album 'A Brighter Beat'. It's the latest incarnation of a long-term collaboration that dates back to Middleton's Arab Strap years.

Reeve, still only 27, has been working 'behind the scene' for many years. Formerly of indie outfit Eva, Reeve's vocal and string talents have, since 2001, been lent to the releases and tours of Idlewild, Arab Strap, Terra Diablo, Union of Knives and The Reindeer Section.

Strike The Colours also recently featured on The Ballads of The Book with a bewitching interpretation of Roddy Gorman's Message in a Bottle. Working closely with core band-member Davy McAulay (Terra Diablo) in 2004, Strike The Colours became what Reeve describes as a 'very DIY, fluid project'. With the exception of McAulay, who Reeve works with at Glasgow's Firebox Studios, its musicians literally - and quite happily - come and go. Its music - inspired by everyone from Karen Dalton and Tom Waits to Joan Baez and Bruce Springsteen - swings smoothly between full band and acoustic. It's now a unique entity that holds Reeve's musical passions and talents at its centre, all the while creating a stage for others' ideas; a collective dynamic that eschews the usual band politics and produces some truly mesmerizing music.

“The band can involve many or few - it creates something I can move within and I think the album really reflects that,” says Reeve. “Acoustic and full band appeals for different reasons; the stripped-back material is more expressive while the full band versions allow the songs to breathe differently and become more dynamic.”

Saturday night. Early. Zoey Van Goey's album will shortly be re-released on Chemikal Underground which is nicely in keeping with a thing we seem to have with them at the moment.
