FRED FRITH

Probably best known for his guitar work, Fred Frith first came to attention as one of the founding members of the English avant-garde rock group Henry Cow. Frith was also a member of Art Bears, Massacre and Skeleton Crew. He has collaborated with a number of prominent musicians, including Robert Wyatt, Brian Eno, Lars Hollmer, The Residents, Lol Coxhill, John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Derek Bailey, Iva Bittová and Bob Ostertag. He has also composed several long works, including Traffic Continues (1996, performed 1998 by Frith and Ensemble Modern) and Freedom in Fragments (1993, performed 1999 by Rova Saxophone Quartet).

Frith's career spans over three decades, he appears on over 400 albums and he was the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel's award-winning 1990 documentary film Step Across the Border. He has contributed to a number of music publications, including New Musical Express and Trouser Press and has conducted improvising workshops across the world. He still performs actively throughout the world and is currently Professor of Composition in the Music Department at Mills College in Oakland, California.

JASPER LEYLAND

Jasper Leyland is the alias of sound explorer Jonathan Brewster, whose work combines melodic drone structures with deft acoustic manipulations and splashes of field recordings. He moves between a variety of instrumental sources such as zither, chimes, melodica, acoustic and electric guitars, and accordian, applying subtle digital processing and layers of found sound to craft dense organic compositions.

I see Fred's also doing 2 other ones...one out at the University, and one at the Music Hall with Evelyn Glennie.

Tunnels for me though!

Yet another musician I thought I'd never see in Aberdeen, and there's the chance to see him 3 times.

i enjoyed both although with fred frith i was momentarily caught between really getting into his soundscapes and thinking "i'm watching a man hit his guitar with an ashtray!?". the former won out.

minus points for the DJ not giving us enough time to finish our conversations (completely necessary after sitting in silence for so long - even with exploding pint glasses...)
