ABERFELDY

Aberfeldy is an indie pop band formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2002. The band is named after the Scottish town of the same name, Aberfeldy. They are (apparently) Scotland's 6th best-loved band and still going from strength to strength - recently playing to 35 Danish people in Denmark.

Their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Young Forever’ was produced by Jim Sutherland in August 2004, and amongst a batch of great press the album was given 9/10 in the NME, alongside a “Single of the Week” accolade for first proper single ‘Heliopolis by Night’. Their multi-layered, pop-driven tunes have been likened to Squeeze and Prefab Sprout, with recent support slots to R.E.M., Blondie, Scissor Sisters, The Beautiful South, James Blunt and Paolo Nutini proving their pop credentials.

Here’s what ‘The Scotsman’ said about them and their latest album - "Following the folksy charms of their debut album, ‘Young Forever’, which was recorded with all band members huddled shivering round one microphone, wearing fingerless gloves and eating stale bread and mouldy cheese (sort of), Edinburgh quintet Aberfeldy return with a bigger budget and a bigger sound, excellently served by the skills of Blue Nile producer Callum Malcolm. ‘Do Whatever Turns You On’ is a wonderful pop album replete with cheesy keyboards, sunshine harmonies and self-doubt - but mainly with glorious tunes such as the KC & the Sunshine Band-meets-Phoenix sounds of the bittersweet Uptight and the sublime synth-pop melancholia of Never Give Up (imagine Ben Folds playing a Casio keyboard rather than battering a baby grand). In his musical career, frontman Riley Briggs has done prog, garage and folk - now he has found his niche, rivalling Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch as Scotland's most inspired pop songwriter."

FINNISTON

Finniston are based in Glasgow, Scotland - consisting of brother and sister Steven and Jolene, Andrew Gifford (who is probably a relation in some way) and Jamie Attridge (who is definitely not related to our knowledge). They play lovely pop with loads of harmonies and different instrumentation, which has been said to have hints of Belle and Sebastian, Idlewild and Aberfeldy.

”It’s the cavalcade, tumble down keyboards, squeezebox wooze and subtly sharp guitaring stitched to those typically Scottish wall to wall sweet n sour vocal sheets that hook you. This is material that grabs you like an over-insistent shiva...seducing, firing you up and drawing you into the whirl or the eddy of their pool. Finniston are too good for me, but you'll cope, love cherish and all that, so do that.”(unpeeled.co.uk)

Anybody who missed them at The Lemon Tree tonight could do worse than nip out to Banchory (30 minutes by car) especially if they need some swanky new t-towels!

I got my tea towel signed by the whole band too. And they have 'Free beer for Tom Weir' badges.

didn't go last night - seen them about half a dozen times before anyway.

Will probably go to the barn gig though.

Were they good last night? What was the crowd like - good turnout?

To be honest it was probably the lowest turnout I've seen for them in Aberdeen. Maybe a combination of Monday night, post Triptych and them playing in Banchory. They seemed to start off slowly but the audience was pretty enthusiastic and that seemed to get them going a bit. They finished with Delila (Tom Jones).

Aberfeldy also played as Sandy Wrights backing band. He's the guy who wrote Tom Weir in case anybody wondered.
