I like Bill Hicks because I think his material is funny, never realised enough people still knew about him who weren't actually aware of him in the first place for him to carry any 'cool' quotia. I also like Denis Leary, besides the duplication of Hicks material, he had some very funny stuff of his own in there and Demolition Man is not the only film he ever appeared in, probably one of the worst though.
I think Bewilderness is the funniest Bill Bailey DVD, if you by the DVD of his earlier stand up show (forget the name offhand) an extended cut of Bewilderness is on there too, save some cash |

I dislike most stand-up comedy. Bill Hicks was alright but vastly over-rated. Bill Bailey is funny to an extent but he's a bit of a one trick pony.
I do like Sarah Silverman though, she's cute and has an awesome potty mouth. But i guess it's that combination that makes her good for me, she looks innocent but she most certainly isn't. My favourite comedian will always be John Cleese though. I can't suppress the laughter when i watch Fawlty Towers and he reminds me of my father. The Aristocrats is shit. |

Ok I know this is off-topic as the thread's about non-funny comedians but I'm surprised there's been no mention of Stewart Lee so far. His show at the Lemon Tree a year or so back was fantastic, though the audience was literally divided by him. "Gaping anus of Jesus !"
There's probably been enough said on Bill Hicks (I'm pretty much with Chris on that one) what the hell I may as well wade in too as I'm an oldie who saw him live in Edinburgh in the early nineties. Of course it may seem dated if you watch it now - it was more than 15 years ago ! In my opinion the best stand-ups are like a good gig: nothing really beats being there for a one-off experience that connects with what's going on here and now (or there and then, as it were) . My take on BH (and Stewart Lee for what it's worth) was that he was trying to get folks to think for themselves, not just blindly accept what authority, TV, or even he, said. Viz Stewart Lee getting a rise out of the Lemon Tree audience with his "scottish heros were guy" bit. Yes Bill Hicks would take the piss out of "his audience" but mainly if they weren't willing to even contemplate any opinion other than their own, or rather, one they'd blindly accepted from the powers that be. He maybe wouldn't give a damn if you didn't like him, but at least give free speech a go eh ? |
