I'd go for 'Part Troll' too, or any series of Black Books.

This was also my first experience of Hicks (I'm a tender 27), I still rate him as one of the greatest.

but I really despise him and he makes me feel sad; not happy like a comedian should.
This is precisely the effect I imagine he aimed for - the definition of 'challenging'....

That reminds me, I think Robin Williams stand-up comedy is appauling. I rate him much higher as an actor.

that's how i feel about hicks. i watched that clip of relentless last night to give him another chance and it's fucking awful. he's just a dick and 80% of his recorded output seems to be him with a mic in his mouth, making annoying sounds. ooh, cutting edge!

I'm a fan of Denis Leary. He plagarises a lot of Hicks' material (or copied it word for word, depending on what account of it you read) but tones it down a wee bit and since he's married with kids he delves into family life as well. Some of his stories about his kids are fantastic. He rants and raves but it's not as aggressive as Hicks - Leary is almost like a cariciture at times.

For me he is a more bearable alternative to Bill Hicks. No doubt that will go down well with the Hicks' brigade, but there you go.

No Cure For Cancer and Lock & Load are recommended Leary offerings.

Andrew Dice Clay is another Yank comedian I find amusing - not just for the x - rated nursery ryhmes. Live in New York is brilliant.

I agree with the earlier point about Al Murray - I used to despise the guy but his stand up show is hilarious and I even like his Saturday night show now.

Don't remember seeing Top Buzzer mentioned here before? That is quality British Comedy. Written by Johhny Vaughan and featuring loads of familiar faces it is a quality alternatibve to "Ideal" with Johnny Vegas. And it's only £4 on Play just now - highly recommended.

Do you like Linkin Park because they're a watered down Deftones? Do you like Busted because they're watered down, family friendly punk? Do you read Maxim because it's watered down porn?

Ah mediocrity. The world loves it so.

Leary's a fucking hack. He sold his soul by ripping off other comics and doing beer adverts for a ticket to the big game (hollywood). Well done, you appeared in Demolition Man. That was really worth losing your credibility for.

The whole point of Hick's material was that it was going to grate with some people while others would love it. He wasn't trying to please everyone, just put across his act the way he thought it should be done. Without compromise. Which is why he was so upset when the Letterman show cut his segment due to their worry about offending sponsors.
