Default [GIG] imp present: Anni Rossi + Rollin Hunt + The Family Simpson @ Peacock Visual Arts

interesting music promotions present:

ANNI ROSSI + ROLLIN HUNT + THE FAMILY SIMPSON

Sunday 27th January 2008
Peacock Visual Arts, 21 Castle Street, Aberdeen. AB10 5BQ
Doors 8.00pm Entry £5

ANNI ROSSI

A foot stompin', viola playing force of nature... Anni Rossi is a startlingly fresh musician from Illinois who has been leaving audiences agog with her unique blend of classical virtuosity, ramshackle percussion and vocal acrobatics. Her songs are alive with possibility and she has that Greenwich Village class via East European barn dance mixed with unkempt singer/songwriter allure all in bundles.

Laying viola and singing simultaneously (no looping pedals here!) she stamps and caterwauls herself into a frenzy. Like Beirut, Final Fantasy or Karen Dalton she seems to have come from nowhere and hit upon a sound that is idiosyncratic, uncontrived and wholly adorable.

Performances at Homefires Festival and Venn, plus supporting Electrelane on their final European tour helped spread her live reputation further. Now she releases her debut 7" on Too Pure (home of Scout Niblett, Electrelane ) to coincide with this tour, and releases an album shortly after.

ROLLIN HUNT

The magic of singer/songwriter Rollin Hunt is how he works with what he's got. Watching him play, backed by his ramshackle band, you sense the chasm between the pop songs he dreams and his delivery -- and his willingness to broach the space regardless of how awkward it may be -- is a winning proposition.

Where Hunt arrives with his songs seems like a wholly earnest accident; his voice is pubescent and unstable, but he manages to eke out some soul, despite a slight speech impediment. Stylistically, he hews to classic '60 pop form -- as if someone was trying to imitate The Shangri-La's or The Ronettes but only knew them from a thirdhand description -- it's all unearthly shoo-be-do, horns and melancholy. Except the songs aren't about love, they're hallucinatory narratives about watching your neighbors make out in their window, distributing a pamphlet about yourself so you can be understood, or antelopes. Hunt has only played a handful of shows, but he's already on his way to becoming a local legend. [The Chicago Tribune]

THE FAMILY SIMPSON

The Family Simpson sometimes sound as beautiful as lemonade soaking through a summer dress. at other times they sound like a kettle being thrown around in a fridge. This singer/songwriter based in Aberdeen, Scotland, influenced by postcard moments, creates brief forays examining emotions and situations from a variety of viewpoints using his voice, loop pedal and variety of lofi instruments.

more stuff...

"California based viola player, Anni Rossi, delivered a spectacular opening set before doubling as a member of Carla Bozulich's band."
THE WIRE, September 2006

"Experimental viola player Anni Rossi has caused an underground buzz since arriving here in August."
TIMEOUT CHICAGO

SCANDIA - Folktale Records
On the Evening of my Birthday I was wandering the streets of Denton, TX when I passed by Hailey's Club off the square. I was debating going in, not wanting to pay a cover (because I am a miser), when the most remarkable new sound in music I have heard in ages was ascending from the structure. Equal parts Joanna newsome and coco rosie, and a touch of epilepsy. Rossi produces a sound so startling I was forced to stoop to beggar status, pleading with the door-woman to allow me to enter without paying cover with the intent of buying Rossi's CD and giving it a good honest listen in the privacy of my own home. On the purchased album, Scandia, Rossi sings, taps (with tap shoes, of course) is keyboardist and masters the viola (NOT the violin,) her primary instrument of choice. her voice is sweet yet smart, tempestuous at times. I cannot recommend this album enough. The greener listener may need to take some time to accumulate full appreciation of this work, but I assure you, it is absolutely worth the effort you may or may not need to grow accustomed to it. And to think, had I not been wandering that night, I may never have come across this rare find. Happy birthday to me.
Megan Foreman, ART PROSTITUTE MAGAZINE

"You might just weep at the music of Anni Rossi. Her songs are about Minnesota tundra and emotional trauma, and she plays the viola like she's battling the minotaur. It's so wonderful and tragic you just might grow an extra set of legs and expire ingloriously."
