THE PICTISH TRAIL with THE FENCE COLLECTIVE

The Picts lived in north and east Scotland in the 3rd to 9th centuries AD. We know little of their history as very few records survive. Today, Johnny Lynch resides in the East Neuk of Fife and runs Fence Records with Kenny Anderson. His recorded output to date as ‘The Pictish Trail’ is SOLD OUT.

Normally, The Pictish Trail has a penchant for madcap folky nonsense, soft melodic meandering, and custard creams. Here, he takes the weird and wonderful Fence Collective out with him on tour to carry his guitars and make him tea. Currently comprising of King Creosote, James Yorkston, OnTheFly, Uncle Beesly and Captain Geeko – this band will blow your preconceptions of Fence being ‘folk’ out of the water.

ZIGGY CAMPBELL

Ziggy Campbell was brought up in Hawick. His father wasn’t a butcher and he never had the brow for rugby so he wrote songs instead. He formed hi-tech lo-fi pop experimentalists FOUND in 2005.

A label called FENCE RECORDS decided they liked FOUND and wanted to release their latest album. Johnny who runs FENCE said that Ziggy was “a truly unique voice and a songwriter with fresh ideas.”

These fresh ideas include developing a sideline solo project which is being unwrapped with staggering effect and never FOUND wanting...

JO FOSTER

Jo Foster, painter potter and piano player, writes melody-strong songs which she sings to piano or guitar or whatever is at hand. Her diy approach has been a fave of The Fence Collective where she made a kind of debut at their annual Homegame, finally taking her songs to the stage.

She has recently toured as support for The Aliens and is probably best known for writing 'Oh Catherine' which she recorded for Lone Pigeon's debut album Concubine Rice. Lately, shows have seen Jo on stage with additional musicians as her songs lend themselves to a harmony rich sound as well as the intimate experience her solo shows bring. Interesting Music regulars will remember her outstanding performance at the Ivor Cutler tribute in January.

Funnily enough, I got an email from The Pictish Trail yesterday.

It was one of those "your CDs in the post. Honest" ones.

some recent is this music? reviews of The Pictish Trail

whilst supporting Bill Callahan

Quote:
In the red corner: The Johnny Lynch led Fence Collective tag team that is The Pictish Trail. Featuring James Yorkston and King Creosote, tonight they are practically a beginners’ guide to what exactly they’re feeding them in the Easy Neuk of Fife. And, the music kinda does that too. Nestling somewhere between the traditional and the avant, the slight songs seem to exist purely to facilitate the jamming parts. Which is understandable, because it’s when the instrumental passages seem to hit some kind of groove that the pieces slot into place. So, patchy with some flashes of brilliance - as I said a beginners’ guide…
on the latest Fence sampler

Quote:
Pictish Trail offer the gentle and accomplished psychedelic folk-pop of ‘All I Own’, an effective, sweetly meandering song that climaxes in an uplifting, hypnotic ending.
as part of the recent King Creosote tour

Quote:
Joined by the band on the second song ‘Nooks’ it’s clear just how together they are as a live act, particularly with fellow Fence Collective member Johnny Lynch AKA the Pictish Trail on guitar (and vocals to melt your heart). Indeed the harmonies and chiming guitars of Mr. Lynch should not be underestimated as to the impact on the live impact of these songs.
