Default Rootin Aboot Workshops: Fiddle, Guitar, Bodhran, Piano, Improvisation+...

All workshops take place at The Lemon Tree, will last around 90 minutes and each session costs £5/£3.25 concessions.

Shetland Fiddle with Filska
Monday 10th April, 3.30pm
St K’s Bar
Filska’s three massively talented fiddlers – Jenna Reid, Gemma Wilson and Bethany Reid – lead this session introducing the distinct characteristics of the famous playing style of the Shetland Isles.


Fiddle workshop with Lauren MacColl
Wednesday 12th April, 3pm
Studio Theatre
This workshop is aimed at players of an intermediate level or above but do not need to have previous experience of traditional music. In addition to teaching a few tunes, she will be looking at ornamentation and phrasing.


Guitar with Barry Reid
Wednesday 12th April, 3pm
St K’s Bar
This session will cover styles of Scottish tune accompaniment and will also take a look at alternative tunings, fingerpicking and flatpicking. Players should be of an intermediate standard but need not have any background in traditional playing.


Improvisation with the Fraser Fifield Trio
Thursday 13th April, 11am
Studio Theatre
Sax/whistle player Fasrer Fifield, drummer Stuart Ritchie and guitarist Graeme Stephen explore ways to incorporate improvisation into your music. For players of all genres and instruments, especially traditional musicians, participants should have enough ability to play comfortably with others. Improvising experience is not essential, but an open mind is.


Fiddle workshop with Fiona Johnson
Thursday 13th April, 3pm
Studio Theatre
GiveWay’s Fiona Johnson grew up playing and performing music. She is a skilled fiddle player as well as an excellent whistle player, guitarist, pianist and singer.


Accordion with Kirsty Johnson
Thursday 13th April, 3pm
Boardroom
Kirsty Johnson is a talented two-row accordion player, an accomplished pianist and sings well too. Kirsty is in her first year at the RSAMD in Glasgow and performs with her sisters in the band GiveWay.


Piano with Kirsty Johnson
Thursday 13th April, 3pm
St K’s Bar
Mairi Johnson is a versatile and skilled piano and keyboard player and is currently expanding her accompaniment skills as a bass guitarist. She will cover the basics of playing with traditional tunes in this workshop.


Fiddle with Gabe McVarish (Beginners)
Saturday 15th April, 11am
Boardroom
Gabe McVarish, twice winner of the All American junior fiddle championship, has established himself as one of the finest players around. This workshop is open to beginners and novice players.


Bodhran with James Bremner
Saturday 15th April, 11am
St K’s Bar
James Bremner’s intricate playing binds the band Daimh’s whole sound together. In this session he’ll cover some of the finer points of accompanying traditional dance music.


Fiddle with Gabe McVarish (Intermediate and Advanced)
Saturday 15th April, 3pm
Boardroom
Daimh’s Gabe McVarish leads this workshop for intermediate and advanced fiddlerrs


Pipes with Angus McKenzie
Saturday 15th April, 3pm
St K’s Bar
Cape Breton’s Angus McKenzie is an award-winning piper in both solo and band competition. His unique style has attracted many admirers and he shares his approach in this session for intermediate and advanced players.
