interesting music are extremely proud & excited to be able to announce
the return of one of our very favourite artists:- A Hawk and A Hacksaw (New Mexico USA) supported by GEORGE (Pickled Egg Records) Nalle (Pickled Egg Records) Wed 2nd Nov 05 The Tunnels Doors 8pm Entry £5 A HAWK AND A HACKSAW (The Leaf Label) From New Mexico, USA comes A HAWK AND A HACKSAW, a hugely entertaining and bewitching act who manages to meld traditional middle eastern with American folk and 21st Century atmospherics. Non-traditional world music for the digital age. This accordion wielding, mariachi loving, knob twiddling act is set to soundtrack this summer, when everyone is set to go GYPSY. A Hawk And A Hacksaw is an album recorded by Jeremy Barnes in Saumur, France, using a chicken, some geese, gongs, cats, a duck, spoons, pieces of tin and various melodic instruments. It‚s the result of sitting in the sun by the Loire reading Cervantes. Recalling Kurt Weill's orchestrations, Carl Stalling‚s visionary cartoon soundtracks and Tom Waits‚ more whimsical works, Mr Barnes creates a playfully gothic atmosphere with his multi-layered, frantic compositions. Mixing field recordings with accordion, piano and bursts of drunken choruses, he generates a singular and unnerving orchestral whole. A song‚s direction can hinge on a dog‚s bark or a phone ringing, while cacophony and sweet hymn-like harmonies cohabit in entertainingly unexpected passages. "I want to make music that tells a story without words, but I would like the story and images to be left to the listener. I have my own, inside my head, but they are not supposed to be on display." Influenced by everything from Eastern European folk music to Pierre Schaeffer to Spike Jones & his City Slickers, there‚s a healthy disregard for boundaries at play. A Hawk And A Hacksaw is a soundtrack for PT Barnum deceits and backwoods carnivals, top hats and curly moustaches, but maybe gone a little more screwy. What's more, everything you hear is live-to-tape. „I don't really like effects, except for a little distortion here and there and maybe some tape echo... I much prefer natural, environmental sounds. They can actually be more bizarre than the effects on any audio program, if you pay attention to them. Mr Barnes may be best known as the drummer for NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, a group whose two albums of distorted pop and homegrown orchestral balladry from 1995 and 1997 have had an immeasurable influence on the music scene of today. His next group, Bablicon, carried the idea of avant-garde percussion and improvisation to new amicable highs. He has also worked with Bright Eyes, Guignol, The Gerbils, and most recently, Broadcast. The strength of A Hawk And A Hacksaw lies in the incorporation of natural tones - birdsong, cat purrs, and patiently captured evidence of insect life - which inject the music with a bucolic sparkle -The Wire www.brokenheartfoundation.org.uk/hawk/ Just an amazing show at Peacock Artspace in the summer, so much so we decided to put them on in a bigger venue, with a fantastic supporting cast featuring:- GEORGE two old friends & rivals, Suzy Mangion and Michael Varty. Both of them play the instruments no one else wants - keyboards & organs from Christmas in the Eighties, from charity shops, corners at parties. They add the combined highlights of the percussion trolley, mixing in a collection of sounds made around the house, a delight in choral singing and harmony groups. Privately sound-tracking a film without leaving the room. Their haunting anachronistic sound, heard in 2003‚s resoundingly successful debut album THE MAGIC LANTERN‚ resurfaces from its own very distinctive musical world. The duo‚s adventures in bricolage gather strength in their recently released 2nd album, A Week of Kindness‚ (also on Pickled Egg), a coherent miscellany of bric-à-brac electronics and clockwork melody. It proffers to the listener the saddest, prettiest songs about early surgical cinema, living in memory or a fearful search for joy, that they will hear for a long time. Suzy also spends a wee bit of time adding the occasional vocal to PIANO MAGIC when needed An antiquarian's magpie methodology...songs that beautifully capture a sense of perpetual loss through the passing of time itself "The Wire" Nothing less than mesmerising. "Very special Sleazenation" The results are never less than mesmerising "Uncut" Delivers beautifully what their early EPs promised "Careless Talk Costs Lives" So intimate and yet so delicately deceiving that you‚ll think the word elegant was made for it "Losing Today"; An enchanting album from two immensely gifted songwriters "City Life" One of the most beautiful pieces of music I've heard in a while "Pitchfork Media" This year's most distinctive and downright magical debut "Delusions of Adequacy" www.pickled-egg.co.uk/george.htm <http://www.pickled-egg.co.uk/george.htm> NALLE formed in the summer of 2004 and is based in Glasgow. The band features Hanna Tuulikki (vocals, kantele, flutes), Aby Vulliamy (viola) and Chris Hladowski (bouzouki, clarinet). Hanna, Aby and Chris also play with SCATTER and The One Ensemble of Daniel Padden, amongst other projects. Pickled Egg Records release their debut album towards the end of this year. NALLE is like a children's toy - a transition object between us and The world. Fused with magic, the haunting songs and sprawling melodies speak of our relationship with the sun, the mountains, and ravens. Through Nalle we waver on the wobbly branch dividing light and dark, only to fall back at the last minute onto beatific harmonies and sunshine. NALLE play a relaxed and explorative set which works its way through a stunning amalgam of folk, psyche, improv and drone. Slow-strumming, madrigal-esque folk mutations, somewhat in the vein of Fursaxa, long notes hanging suspended in the air like mean, mystical old albatrosses. A masterclass in drone, teasing blissful feedback textures from bowed bouzouki, clarinet, and a fine array of pedals n.b. Pickled Egg records were one of John Peel's favoured labels. On this tour there will be a double CD called JAR with loads of Pickled Egg artists. Over two and a half hours of fantastic electic music from the likes of THe Go Team (former pickled egg label signings), Need New Body, Pop Off Tuesday, L'Augmentation, Scatter, Volcano the Bear and far too many to name Like the Line UP - A Bargain |

Hawk and A Hacksaw kick ass. A fiver too!? ye canni grumble at that. I havent heard the others but from their description, it appears they are the kinda shit I would usually devour for fun. Ive missed too many good gigs here recently, so i'll try and get along. If I can't make it - I hope the Hawk and his rusty blade, do indeed, kick ass.
