Thomas Truax

Thomas Truax (pronounced troo-aks) is a New York City based singer/songwriter and multi-media artist who performs with mechanical sound sculptures like his Cadillac Beatspinner Wheel <http://www.thomastruax.com/beatspinner.html> and instruments which he builds himself out of found objects and spare parts (such as the Hornicator <http://www.thomastruax.com/hornicator.html> ), as well as with more standard gear like guitars and toy piano. He is an illegitimate son of Screamin' Jay Hawkins and a mad scientist of experimental music with a history as a stop-motion animator. His carefully crafted songs range from dark, romantic lullabies to lively rock melodramas. His 'Wowtown News' radio show airs on Resonance FM in London.

Sergeant Buzfuz
Touring with a 5 piece comprising drums, cello, violins, dulcimer and Sergeant Buzfuz (Joe Murphy). May sees the release of "Fruit Machine" a compilation CD of UK acts who've played at Blang the monthly night he promotes at the 12 bar club in London. On the comp will be Chris T-T and The Broken Family Band and a whole host of other weird and wonderful people from the London underground.

Part of the UK's alternative folk/country scene (see also The Broken Family Band, The Folk Orchestra and Chris T-T), Sergeant Buzfuz is actually Joe Murphy, a Sheffield musician and wry lyricist who lives in London. Fire Horse, his latest album, is a rich, passionate record that brings to mind Leonard Cohen in a snug bar or a more loveable Chumbawamba. Murphy's raspy vocals also conjure up the spirit of Strummer and many of these songs could be off some alternative Sandinista!

"Rich in originality, with lyrics that are vivid and at times very funny. Complimented by an eccentric five-piece band that plays instruments ranging from the maraccas to the hammered dulcimer, Sergeant Buzfuz's sound, as you may have guessed, verges on the adventurous. The Kitchen Cynics
Alan Davidson is the Kitchen Cynics. After attending Art School he has worked as an Art Teacher in a local school for more than 20 years. He didn't start making music until he was in his late twenties. He's been recording bedroom-pop-psychedlica for more than 15 years and has released over 30 cassette, single and album releases on various labels around the world including Get Happy label of Germany, the Pink Lemon label (also Germany), and the Secret Eye label (Rhode Island USA). The Kitchen Cynics have also appeared on many compilations, alongside Half Japanese, Tom Rapp and Damon & Naomi.

The Kitchen Cynics had never played live until being invited to join Tom Rapp onstage in Boston at Terrastock 5 (2002), followed soon after by a radio session for WFMU, recorded at WNYC. Since then there have been several live performances, supporting acts such as Black Forest Black Sea, Alasdair Roberts, Thomas Truax, Schwervon and Amy Rigby. The Kitchen Cynics have been described as Scotland's greatest exponent of great-auntie folk. What is great Alan is performing at his best ever level right now. A local legend

Nah, not trying to be "in the know" or anything.

It's a one man show with his own home made instruments if that's any help.

Take my advice & go along - it's a snip at a fiver, believe me. The last couple of times he's played in Aberdeen have been entertaining & enjoyable.

Thomas is a quite remarkable performer, who add a very strong visual element to his shows
add his humour & great songs & sometimes scary persona will entertain you like no other.......... & then there is his musical assistants

I would always go to see Thomas live, lowball! His songs are weird in the best way, and he has a very engaging personality, with a fun show. He doesn't need the bizarre home-made instruments, as the songs stand on their own, but it all adds up to a fantastic evening out. Everybody who saw the last 2 shows seemed to come out happier than they went in, and the last night he played at Drakes was one of my all-time favourite gigs.

Thomas Truax is a genuine one-off. Please don't think of the home made instruments as a gimmick. They aren't. As Alan says, the songs are strong enought to stand alone. However they to add to what is always an entertaining show. One of my favourite live performers.
