Please find below full details of Rootin Aboot 2005, The Lemon Tree’s twelfth annual celebration of folk, roots and acoustic music. Once again we present the best of Scottish traditional music alongside top-class artists from all over the world.

Great Scottish acts such as Deaf Shepherd, Blazin' Fiddles and Dochas will share the stage with musicians from Ireland, the US, Denmark, Norway, Croatia, Poland and Argentina this year. It's not all jigs and reels either as we have something for all manner of tastes in this year's programme including blues, country, jazz, latin and Balkan music and a very special "punky folky party" on the Friday featuring Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers who are tipped to be the sensation of the week!

This is the busiest week in the Lemon Tree's calendar and as well as the great lineup of evening concerts and clubs, we have fantastic free lunchtime performances every day for all the family. Artists include Irish stars Grada, Ivan Drever and Duncan Chisholm and local heroes Banish Misfortune in a specially expanded format. And for those of you who want to get involved in a hands-on capacity there are a wide range of workshops taking place throughout the week, offering everything from Songwriting to Balkan Accordion and a Fiddle Masterclass.

Deaf Shepherd / Gràda

Rootin Aboot’s concert series gets off to a great start with two great traditional bands. Scottish favourites Deaf Shepherd return to the stage with a new, mouth-watering line up while the fabulous young Irish group Grada make their Aberdeen debut.

Deaf Shepherd
Following a short break from live work and some changes to their line up, Deaf Shepherd are back! Featuring four original members and two of the most exciting instrumentalists to emerge in recent years, the new line up is:

A Deaf Shepherd performance runs the full gamut of moods and emotions, from the hell-for-leather elation of fiery jigs and reels, through the stirring majesty of Highland pipe marches, to the haunting eloquence of slow airs and ballads. Their instrumental arrangements match power with precision, contemporary inventiveness with authentic traditional taste, while lead singer John Morran, with his richly expressive, subtly poignant voice, is widely recognised as his generation's leading exponent of Scots song.

Gràda
In their short three-year existence, Dublin-based band Gráda have quickly risen to the top of the contemporary Irish scene. Mixing Irish, Breton, Eastern European, and other diverse styles with many original tunes led by Alan O’Doherty on flute and whistles and fiddler Brendan O’Sullivan. The band’s unique rhythm comes courtesy of their Antipodean engine room of Gerry Paul on guitar and bouzouki and Andrew Laking on double bass. The outstanding singer and
bodhran player Anne Marie O’Malley completes a formidable line-up.

This feast of American roots music is a must for all blues and country fans, with much more on offer besides as two tremendous acts come together for extremely rare Aberdeen performances.

Brendan Croker and Steve Phillips
Two of Britain’s greatest blues guitarists reunite for a very scarce duo performance. Both formidable solo performers and bandleaders (Brendan with the 5 O’Clock Shadows) they joined forces in the 80s and quickly became one of the most sought after acts on the booming acoustic circuit of the time. They upped the ante further in the ‘90s when they were both invited to become part of Mark Knopfler’s Notting Hillbillies project, enjoying album chart success and a succession of sellout national tours. Expect more than blues with slices of folk, country, western swing, rock’n’roll and a healthy dollop of humour.

Steve Young
Steve Young has been a performer and songwriter for over thirty years and is one of Americana’s great troubadours. Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle, two of the most talented singer-songwriters on today's alternative country scene, have long sung Young's praises. "As a writer," Williams said, "Steve is in a league with Dylan and Hank Williams - and he sings like an angel." His songs have been covered by the Eagles, Joan Baez, Dolly Parton, Henry Rollins and Travis Tritt, Hank Williams Jr. and Waylon Jennings, among others. He still retains a keen contemporary edge in his work, often performing with his son Jubal Lee, and his broad musical vision takes in country, blues, southern gospel, tejano, bluegrass and a celtic accent, courtesy of Young’s strongly felt Scottish ancestry.

Szapora / Eduardo Niebla Guitar Duo

A thrilling programme of exotic European music is in store with the spellbinding Spanish guitarist Eduardo Niebla opening proceedings with a showcase of his unbelievable technique and intensity. The British/Balkan ensemble Szapora will then raise the blood temperature even higher with their glorious mix of heartrending ballads, uproarious drinking songs and breakneck dance tunes in improbable time signatures.

eastern Europe. Romanian doinas, Hungarian czardas and Bulgarian horas and songs and dances from Bosnia, Macedonia and Russia jostle for position in a truly unforgettable live set.

Eduardo Niebla
World class Spanish virtuoso Eduardo Niebla has been widely regarded as one of the finest acoustic guitarists on the planet for two decades. His unique style is rooted in flamenco but has a strong jazz influence as well as shadings of rock and other traditional musics. He has performed with a bewildering array of artists
and groups but is best known for his inflammable guitar duo with Antonio Forcione, who performed several memorable Lemon Tree concerts. We are delighted to welcome him back after many years in the same format, this time with second guitarist Ricardo Garcia.

The Scottish Arts Council’s Tune Up programme brings us an unmissable night of celtic music with Michael McGoldrick, award winning flautist and Irish piper, and his high octane band plus Dòchas, the hottest new Scottish traditional band around.

Dóchas
From every corner of the Highlands and Islands, Dochas produce one of the freshest and most exciting sounds in the contemporary folk scene and have taken it by storm in the last two years. In 2004 they toured Ireland, Europe and Canada to massive acclaim and rounded off the year by deservedly winning the Best Newcomers title at the Scottish Trad Awards.

Something a little different for Rootin Aboot as we present a night of roots music from the margins with a definite outlaw worldview. Neck
Over the last five years, London-Irish band Neck have firmly established themselves as a leading force in the folk-punk scene, their irrepressible psycho-ceilidh sound marking them out as transatlantic cousins of Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys. The 6-piece band combines the swirling abandon of traditional
Irish music (fiddle, tin-whistle, banjo and uilleann pipes); with the rip-roaring electric guitar, bass & drums of a full-on punk band. All topped-off with the raucous, passionate vocals of song-smith Leeson O'Keeffe formerly of Shane MacGowan’s Popes.

Selecter Acoustic
Selecter Acoustic came into being in 1998 and is an offshoot of the great Two Tone band the Selecter, featuring singer/songwriter Pauline Black and songwriter/producer Nick Welsh. Their hugely entertaining live show will feature all The Selecter hits including Too Much Pressure and On My Radio, tracks from their recent albums, and stories that chart the beginnings of ska and reggae through Two Tone to the present day.

We end Rootin Aboot appropriately enough with the reigning Best Live Act from the Scottish Trad Awards, the wonderful Blazin’ Fiddles. If you’re not worn out from dancing to them, La Sonera Calaveras will take you into the wee small hours with some wonderful latin grooves.

In the past decade no other band has quite captured the excitement, passion and the sensitivity of Scottish music as Blazin' Fiddles. With the fiddlers in the
band hailing from Mallaig (Allan Henderson) Shetland (Catriona Macdonald), Glenfinnan (Iain MacFarlane), Inverness (Bruce MacGregor) and Oban (Aidan
O'Rourke), it's fair to say that Blazin' Fiddles embodies the spirit of today's Highland fiddle music. The band arrive as holders of the Best Live Act title from
the Scottish Trad Awards and fresh from their ambitious Strings Attached tour with Eddi Reader, Justin Currie of Del Amitri and Colin McIntyre of Mull Historical
Society. It’s back to business as usual tonight though with the band playing for a dancing audience for the first time at The Lemon Tree.

La Sonera Calaveras
This Glasgow sextet are now firmly established as one of the UK’s very finest latino bands. The band continue the revival of the magical sound of Cuba popularized by the Afro-Cuban All-Stars and Buena Vista Social Club but executed in the more intimate style of the countryside associated with Compay Segundo and Septeto Nacional. Incredibly danceable, La Sonera Calaveras’ repertoire mixes original material and their own versions of traditional songs,
all done in the old-fashioned afrocuban way.

All sessions cost £5 (£3.25 concessions) and will last for around 90 minutes. Please note that the Fiddle Master Class on Saturday the 9th of April consists of two sessions which must both be taken, costing £10 / £6.50 for both parts.

Gerry Paul plays guitar and bouzouki with the acclaimed Irish band Grada and is a key part of the rhythmic engine room that gives the band their unique sound.

Songwriting led by Steve Young

Steve Young is a great singer, guitarist and above all a great songwriter - his best known songs include Seven Bridges Road (recorded by The Eagles and Dolly Parton) and Waylon Jennings’ signature song, Lonesome On’ry And Mean. In this session, he’ll take a holistic approach to his work - guitar, voice and writing - and share his methods, views and experiences. Participants are welcome to bring along instruments, finished songs and work-in-progress.

Oli Wilson Dickson, fiddler with Szapora will lead this session introducing participants to the eastern and central European traditional music performed by the band.

Using her knowledge and mastery of East European folk styles, Tea Hodzic and other members of the Balkan ensemble Szapora will work with vocalists to inspire them in their own approaches to traditional song.

One of the world’s foremost acoustic guitarists, Eduardo Niebla leads this unmissable workshop for intermediate and advanced players. Topics covered will include flamenco jazz rhythms, Spanish finger-style playing, right hand techniques and improvisation in a very down to earth way.

Arranging For Voice and Instruments led by Fromseier Rose and Inge Thomson

This workshop focuses on arranging a set of tunes or a song for both melody and rhythm instruments. This would include selecting the material and then going through different ideas on how to arrange and what each musician should listen for in the others. The session is open to all rhythm and melody players as well as singers.

Arranging For Voice and Guitar led by Bruvoll-Halverson

Tore and Jon Anders will give a workshop in both traditional Norwegian singing and not-so-traditional guitar playing. They will demonstrate how one can arrange this music in simple, yet expressive ways. In their case, just with an acoustic guitar. The songs will span from medieval ballads to "lighter" material such as
Norwegian "stev" and "viser". Feel free to bring any instrument along for the interactive part of the session.

Fiddle Masterclass with Aidan O’Rourke and Catriona MacDonald

This two-part workshop is led by Blazin’ Fiddles’ Aidan O’Rourke and Catriona MacDonald and is designed for intermediate and advanced players only.

Former Wolfstone bandmates, singer-songwriter/ guitarist Ivan Drever and fiddler Duncan Chisholm are established as one of Scotland's top duo's, playing
mainly traditional venues and festivals across the UK, Europe and recently the USA.

“Chisholm’s superbly expressive, virtuoso fiddling and Drever’s powerful chord accompaniments and imaginative single-line picking on guitar have always
been highly compatible, but a decade of working together has brought a telepathic sense of communication to the gig.” - The Scotsman

Jubal Lee Young

Jubal Lee Young’s songs are reckless, deep and spiritual, meticulously crafted and delivered by an amazing voice that can go in a heartbeat from a falsetto whisper to a lion’s roar. Touring and performing with his father Steve, Jubal Lee is currently earning a formidable reputation for his own work, receiving plaudits from Van Dyke Parks, Mary Gauthier and David Olney among others. He blends the country, folk and bluegrass soaked up during his youth with his own
rock influences to create a highly distinctive songwriting sound.

Fromseier Rose with Inge Thomson
Thursday 7th April
Fromseier Rose are Danish fiddler Ditte Fromseier Mortensen and American pianist Michael G Rose. They play elegant roots music with a repertoire that combines their own compositions with contemporary and traditional Celtic and Scandinavian tunes. Ditte's full sound and rhythmic bounce is complemented by the swinging pulse from Michael's New England roots and his jazz influenced interpretations. For this special Rootin Aboot performance they are joined by Fair Isle’s Inge Thomson on vocals and accordion.

Bruvoll-Halvorsen

Jon Anders Halvorsen is a young folk singer who specializes in songs from his native area of Telemark in southern Norway. Over the past year Jon Anders has collaborated with the gifted guitarist Tore Bruvoll. Together they bring historic songs into a modern context, the effects of which are at times delicate and touching, and at others powerful and moving.

Banish Misfortune & Friends
Saturday 9th April
Banish Misfortune were formed in 2001 from the vibrant local session scene in Aberdeen, Scotland by North Cork buttonbox player Tom Roche, whistle and fiddle player Sara Reith and guitarist/singer Paul Tasker. These musicians different backgrounds have blended together into a distinctive style which takes the listener on a journey from North East Scotland, to Cork, via Nashville. They will be joined on stage today in a specially expanded lineup for Rootin Aboot
by Davy Cattanach (percussion and vocals), Brian Cromarty (mandola, bass and vocals), and Karen Hannah (fiddle).
