There were many times when I survived on nothing but toast for a week. The whole skint student thing sounds like a laugh, but when you are literally, completely penniless, with no food, it stops being so funny.

Is it not just a case of swings and roundabouts though? Because there are plenty of people who have degrees out there going for non-degree based jobs companies are generally likely to go for someone with a degree in anything rather than someone without a degree.

It's a shitty time to look for a job.

I'd doubt that actually, depending on the type of job you're going for.

If no qualifications are strictly necessary, experience would win the day over a degree.

But, if you were equal in all other ways going head to head with someone with a degree (and you didn't have a degree), it might swing it their way, but then it might swing it the other way depending on who's interviewing. There are plenty of people out there who think university is a complete waste of time and hate students/educated people etc (see above.)

Totally, i was meaning a non-experienced person with a degree against a non-experienced person without a degree. Of course an experienced person within a particular field will obviously get it over someone who just happens to have a degree.

Having a degree does show that someone is willing to put the time and effort into something generally though and going to University is a life experience as well, something that you wouldn't get by not going. It would also be fair to assume that someone who's got a degree would be more mature than someone fresh out of school.

Aye - misunderstood your last post. Thought you were giving the general opinion that someone with a degree is more employable than someone without a degree (regardless of anything else!)

I've got 2 degrees, which makes me doubly useless in some people's eyes...

I didn't get a degree and I have a pretty decent job. Though I would be in a much better position if I hadn't got fed up of the "corporate ladder" at 22 and quit my job in order to dick about and be irresponsible for a few more years.

I don't regret a minute of it though, it dented my career development a bit, but it was worth it. I wasn't yet ready to get mired down in the 9-5 world (which I have since returned to!) so I just worked in a bunch of shitty low paying, no responsibilty jobs, and enjoyed myself while I was still young.

Hmm, experience of work, an entrepreneurial attitude and good references can be much more attractive to an employer than a newly minted degree and precious little else.

Are you thus saying people should do degrees so that they can get the edge on unexperianced non-graduate school-leavers for non-graduate jobs they could have applied for four years earlier? That makes no sense!

I do agree with you (in some cases) that graduates will be more mature than someone fresh out of school. This however is mainly due to the fact that the people in question will be at least four years older.
