Default Making Gif's from movie clips

I see these around and want to make some for myself.

Does anyone know where I can get software to make the conversion from, say, Mpeg to Gif?

You could take the cheapo way and use the print screen function, then load it into an image editor...although I am somewhat of an arse when it comes to technology, so that probably isn't what you're looking for at all.

JASC Animation Shop (bundled with PaintShop Pro) will open AVI files, let you edit them down and save as gif.

true, but lets do keep in mind that mpg and gif files are two different worlds, there isn't going to be anything fancy like digital surround sound or anything like that in the gif format. and if you have a lot of frames, chances are that either loading times will be very long, or the frames will just flicker across the screen.
