Default H264 Video Codec?

I need help technophiles! got a new video download but it requires me to have the H264 codec, thing is, this is a new piece of Video technology...

so to the question:

does anyone know where I can get a stand alone player with H264 implemented already? I've tried Divx, WMP10 just collapses and dies when it tries to get the codec and quicktime 7 aint ready yet.

the other option - where do I put the codec after I've downloaded it as I've got it sitting on it's own all lonely, does it need to go into the windows folder somewhere so it appears on the Windows Control Panel?

Surely you open it - the file to download is an executable. To install plugins, in my experience, they are all executables that self-install.
