Default Search engine submission

I figure their might be some people on here who know a thing or two about websites. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best ways to submit a website to search engines. I did submit the url to google and altavista a while ago but only a few sites come up and none of them are the acctual url...any help would be groovy, cheers!

Google spiders this web site at least every few days. I have no idea why as I've never submitted this web site to a search engine before.

dont you need to have META tags on your website though? Its all well and good submitting it, but if there arnt key words that it searches by, then its never gonna come up.

Or so ive heard......

Been trying to figure out a way for ages of getting sites bumped a little, but frankly apart from paying for an advertising slot, it just doesn;t seem to want to work.
