Default The state of the world today

I'm sure this is something that everyone notices as being quite a bleak time

ahead. Oil is running out along with all the other narutal and unrepleneshable

natural resources but this only hit me as being such the terrifying predicamnt

it truly is, last night.....playing Age of Empires.

I am the underdog fighting against 3 castles, eachone meaner than the last but

its nothing to worry about - I have plenty of resources....well at least I mean

my food and wood is high. You see these resources were sufficient to begin

with since my primitive age I was living in only really relied on wood and food

so things were alright. My boats were fending off intruders and the castle

walls, although made of stone, used little resources and what I didn't have I

made up for by trade through the market. My first to third assault on the

easiest of the castles left my sources fairly unscathed and by regularly

replenishing my farm land I was able to keep a bit of momentum up with stocks

so when my army inevitably died the first few times from the overpowering

opposition, I could nip back and make more units.

On the third attempts I'd realised that the only way to defeat the enemy of the

north was through little in the way of tactics but rely instead heavily on

Knights. But the knights were expensive. My gold trade through wood and food

increased substantially leaving the gold exchange rate significantly lower than

my first dealings. I was now giving a 100 sticks for a 14 gold return and

likewise for the wood but still not big deal as the forests are wide and

prosperous in my region so I pull loads of gold from the market for a small

return in gold but enough, I feel, to make good a raid on the backs of

Battering Rams and Knights. The mission goes realy well but I notice after

being away from base for a while that all my farms have exhasted and the wood

chopping gang have been killed by a boat the enemy uses that fires arrows its

own length. Still no big deal because people in this game, and indeed life

itself, are disposable so I send another ship of workers over to the island

where woodcutting is its only benefit.

Meantime I am sent an order that I will be getting vengeance for destroying on

of the British castles, to which I realise I need to be protective of my base.

In the anticipation of an all out war I over react by creating more units than

necessary. When the attack coems, it comes in a form I didn't expect.

Virtually nothing. I have fire ships, guard towers, demolition boats, large

arrow shooter boats, not to mention the land untils and subsequently I have

depleated my resources by half. Now down to just above a 5 figure sum.

It takes me several moments to realise, after the units are built and the farms

resown, that the wood cutters sent to cut down wood from the first forest are

now idle and its then that I realise my wood isn't going to last forever.

Naturally I look into future surplus in the bigger and, my totally reliant only

alternate wood sources to see that its almost depleated. I'd used 7/8's of

that forest too and, with two more attachs still to come, with no additional

stock left in the way of gold and stone I begin to worry a little so (unlike

real life) I save the game and begin to make preparations to harvest overseas

even though I know this will indeed be a temporary source also. My main gola

here is to get this crop of gold in the north west of the game but as I send 5

workers to the spot, they meet thier demise very suddenly with an ambush of

trebuchets, knights and basically everyone with weapons more basic than a

fishing net.

My plans here were stumped. It seems I didnt look into the future and instead

put all my eggs in one faltering basket.

I put it to the people that hold positions of power in the strongest parts of the world to play this game. To live the devastation and mindless killing that I succumbered to and then reflect on your positions on the world.

Maybe then you will see that its not worth it. That peace, sharing and No Ties Aid are some of the best ways forward. You need more than your mortal corpse to defend you.

Although in the game I won with flying colours and used little of my indisposable resources by entering a cheat that enabled me to use Audi TT sports cars with rocket launchers attached but the point I made remains valid.
