Personally, I would start with a digital camera. Why limit yourself to 36 images per film when you can trial and error with 100's.

Canon vs Nikon....

Canon have been ahead regarding digital until Nikon released the D3. Since then, Canon have been quiet.

To be honest, I don't give a shit. If you cant take a decent picture with a Canon or a Nikon then give up. People can get so caught up in megapixels (really, it's not that important), iso's etc etc. Who cares? Whack a decent 50mm lens onto a full-frame DSLR and your sorted (IMHO)
yea but if you're just starting out and it's a hobby there's not much point buying an all singing all dancing d3 of 1dsmk3 is there? unless you are rich.

in saying that, the 5d is obviously pretty good and nikon just announced a fullframe camera in between the d300 and d3 which looks astoundingly good called the d700. bit pricey on pre-order but should hopefully come down once it's released in a couple of months. i'm saving up for one now cause you are right about full frame being the way to go but only if you're selling pictures i think. you don't need it if all your snaps just go on the internet or are printed 7x5.

canon will most likely release a replacement for the 5d either later this year or spring next year which should shake things up a bit. they're also releasing another budget model called the 1000d which should be their entry level one and has slightly lower specs than the 450d.

I've been waiting for a rather long time on an updated 5D... when they started lowering the price of the 5D late last year i got excited, but aparantly nothing will be released till late on this year

im contemplating just getting the 5d, it is a an AMAZING camera, but knowing my luck they will release a mark 2 a week after i buy one, and it will have the best specs ever, and not be much more pricey

aye, i'd hang on a little bit if i were you. given that nikon have just released the 5d slaying d700 then i'm sure canon will be planning an update shortly if they haven't already. it'll come out near the 2 grand mark though i'd imagine.

The price tag is bearable for what i imagine will be an amazing piece of kit. The 5d is brilliant, so i cannot wait for an upgrade.

d700 looks a tasty bit of a kit but don't understand the pricing structure when you can now buy the d3 for ~2700. guess the d3x will be on its way soon.

i think it's just the launch price. i'd imagine all the retailers will discount it by the second month.

i'd look for the d3x next year once the d3 is more established. that's my guess anyhoo.

reckon you could be right on that. there’s a lot of chat and rumors about the d3x being 24 megapixal. not sure i have much requirement for that at the moment. for now i'm more than happy with d3.

i don't think anyone other than achitecture or fashion photographers would need 24 megapixels. the best advance they've made for me is with noise. if i can take pictures in almost any light with no noise then i'm happy which is why i want a d700 or d3. damn lack of cash

Yeah, true Dave. Although I reckon you can get decent results from a cheap 2nd hand 20d and a £60 50mm 1.8. Infact, I would quite happily shoot a wedding using just that...however, I don't think it would look to professional.
