Consumer Broadband

Demon broadband. Had it for ages now. Virtually no problems, great service, and as cheap as anything. It is unlimited so long as you stick to the fair use policy.

£17.99 p/m

up to 8mb

my mates introduced me a while back, they are all on it and really like it. Same with me!

A word of warning about Sky's broadband deal (which includes Sky TV and telephone line) - they force you to use a Sky branded Netgear router running their own specific version of firmware. So you can't use your own router with Sky's service or upgrade the router they provide. You just have to stick with it. Which may or may not be a problem for some people.
you sure about that? i told the guy on the phone i wouldn't need the router and he said not to worry about it and they'd send it anyway but i could use my own one.

I'm fairly sure you could use your own one if you wanted. You just need to get the username and password details for the account. They don't give you that in the paperwork you get sent though as they assume you'll use the router they supply with that info already entered.

I usually have to reboot mine about once a week on sky. It's a bit irritating so I might see about getting a new router.

Yeah I'd have thought so. Be warned though I had to phone their broadband tech support last night (for something to do with the sky.com website, fuck knows why I got directed to there from the general cust services number) and it sounded like a north american reading off a helpdesk script on the other end of the line. Interrupt them quickly and very clearly state what you want otherwise they may harp on for ages about your computer settings. The one I had last night was heading that way before I stopped them.

Can't see them not giving you your broadband username and password details if you ask for them. Any other setup info you can get from your sky router, give me a phone if you have trouble finding the login details and I'll tell you the username and password for the admin screen.

virgin fibreoptic (2mg) has been great for me. I use it for xbox live and the like and rarely any fuck ups. I also find it is just as fast as my old "10mg" broadband which I paid business rates for

Can't get that in Aberdeen, there's no cable infrastructure (or there is but no-one took it over when atlantic went bust). So none of the cable style offerings that places like Dundee get are available here.

the latency will probably be the same regardless of the sync rate of the line, so it will appear to be roughly the same speed for anything using less than 2Mbit sustained, i.e average webbrowsing etc, but 10Mbit is faster if you're downloading anything bigger than a few megs at a time.

AFAIK there is no cable in Aberdeen yet anyway.

I haven't really had any problems with BT, the dect/voip service is reliable and when you offset the free calls against the cost of the subscription it works out fairly cheap.

possibly, although I downloaded a couple of .wav albums yesterday and it was pretty much exactly the same speeds as when I did it on the "10mg" in my old place
