a telnet chat server might be easier, just a thought because all computers that i know windows, apple, sun, amiga, acorn, BSD, UNIX, Linux all have telnet clients included and it wouldnt be too hard to write a telnet server and host it on adsl or something

Telnet is not designed for acting or serving as a "chat server". That is what IRC is there for.
