14TH - THIEVES LIKE US (KITSUNÉ), PLUS SUPPORT

Thieves Like Us met in Mauer Park, Berlin in 2002. Two of the band Swedish and the third from the US, they were friends hanging out in a vast foreign city. Struggling with the language and the culture, they hadn't registered their residencies at the local city hall and were very much fish out of water – they couldn’t even rent movies from the local Videotek. Instead they spent their time trying to find places to go out drinking and dancing, but all they would hear was techno and electro, a far cry from their preferred rock and pop. Frustrated with the music scene of Berlin, they began to DJ, playing old krautrock, italo disco, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Factory Records stuff, and even new hip-hop, later on progressing to French filter house. Their cross over DJ sets seemed to confuse the Berliners, so they took to persuing a career in electronic music purely out of hearing and see a lot of electronic music they didn’t like. There challenge being to do it better; and so Thieves Like Us became. Unable to gain a label or following in Berlin, they’ve temporarily relocated to New York City; where their fresh, romantic electro pop crosses between Hot Chip and German Krautrock music has been gaining much deserved appreciation. There recent Drugs In My Body Remix has been released on the super chic French label Kitsuné, and as we know from label mates like Digitalism, Hot Chip, The Whip and Cazals, everyone associated with the boutique label is set for big things and branded with the not so black brush of super cool trendsetters.
