If he kept his consumption of drugs to himself, and didn't allow it to interfere with anyone else's lives, then I may agree with you. However, we're talking about someone who was caught on camera injecting heroin into an unconscious woman's arm, someone who has been caught driving under the influence of drugs, endangering himself and others, and someone who has been tried and convicted of burglary (an act performed in order to feed his habit). He shows no sign of repenting and will no doubt carry on in this vein until he winds up dead, which I have no doubt will happen very soon if even half the stories about his habit and lifestyle are true.

For the good of themselves, and for the good of society, hardened addicts like Doherty should be given a chance to clean up for good, or else face stiff jail sentences, which would act as both a deterrent and a preventative measure to anyone who would follow in their footsteps.

The reason these drugs are illegal is because they damage the individual mentally and physically, they damage their families emotionally, and damage the community and society as a whole. Doherty got off very lightly IMO, and he's lucky the judge didn't make the example of him, for the good of himself and for society, that a great many people think he deserved.
