That was more or less it. As the different times for the pubs & clubs was reached, the bar just descended. Anyone in the queue but not in the door was told to go away & try the later-opening queues. Hence the number of folk trying to swick their way up the queue (think how taxi-rank here could be)
Think a fair number of the carry-outs & late shops in that area were doing a roaring under the counter trade in booze as well.
A vague memory but I think there is/was a nominal advisory number for queues under the licencing regs which might be tolerable? IIRC tho, it was not very much, @20-30 people max.
Maybe one of the pub/door people could clarify if that might have any bearing.
