i bet morrissey regrets writing 'heaven knows i'm miserable now' that seems to be the root of where people get this idea that the smiths and morrissey are depressing. if you actually read the words to the song it is a perfect description of what life was like for young people in the dangerous climate of 1984.
i think there's been few if any lyricists with more charm, intelligence, humour and wit than morrissey.
but he is an acquired taste and not everyone's cup of tea....
